Davidson Oturu

Davidson is a Partner in AELEX, a reputable firm with offices in Nigeria and Ghana, and works in the firm’s corporate/commercial, intellectual property (IP), technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) practice groups.

Davidson regularly counsels on matters related to technology, data protection, entertainment and intellectual property rights. He advises clients on a range of legal issues affecting Information and Communication Technology (ICT). He also advises on various trans-border issues relating to ICT, including but not limited to Data Protection & Privacy, Financial Technology (FinTech), Cybersecurity, Digital Signature, Digital Rights Management (DRM) and the use of Digital Assets.

He was recently appointed by the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) to the committee charged with the responsibility of setting up a framework for the use of FinTech in the Capital Markets. He is the subcommittee chair for Middle East, Africa & South East Asia (MEASA) on the Legislation and Regulation Committee of the International Trademark Association (INTA). He is also a member of the Africa Global Advisory Council of the INTA which has oversight functions over the advancement of IP in Africa. As a member of this committee, he has been canvassing for the amendment of the obsolete IP laws in Nigeria.

He belongs to several associations including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Committee as well as the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Law Group of the American Bar Association (International Section), the Chartered Management Institute, the UK Chartered Institute of Trademark Attorneys and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).

He was recognised by the World Trademarks Review, in its 2019 and 2020 rankings, as one of the world’s leading 1,000 trademarks practitioners. He was also recognised as a ‘next generation lawyer’ by the Legal 500 in its 2019 rankings. In 2020, Chambers & Partners ranked him in its 2020 Guide as a “recommended adviser” on fintech transactions.

He has an LL. B from the University of Ibadan (Nigeria), an LL.M from the University of Cumbria (UK) and an MBA from the University of London (UK).
