The concept behind Bio-Individuality is simple: Each individual is unique, which means that nutritional requirements will vary from person to person. No one diet works for everyone. Just like we all enjoy different styles in fashion and different music and movies, we also intuitively understand, on a very deep level, that one person's food is another person's poison.
Bio-individuality is a fundamental concept that can help us embrace the profound beauty of a flexible, integrative approach to nutrition. While we share many similarities, nature created each human being as their own unique microcosm. We are more remarkable for the ways we differ than for the ways we are alike. Everything in life is bio-individual and our bodies are sophisticated bio-computers that dont ever need us to remind them to breathe, think, pump blood, produce saliva, and a million other autonomic functions.
While watching fad diets sweep the entire world, from high carbohydrate diets in the 70s to low-fat diets in the 80s to high protein diets in the 21st Century, we have to recognize that no one diet works for everyone. We are way too individualistic to all eat the same food and thrive. Each person has very specific needs for his or her own health according to age, constitution, gender, size, lifestyle and ancestry.
Understanding the concept of bio-individuality as it relates to each individual will automatically free us from the lunacy of the media and the fickleness of diet trends.
Our bodies need us to pay close attention to the signs and signals they sends us with each and every meal and choice that we make (including thoughts that we think) so that we can respond accordingly, building a healthy, happy, relationship with our bodies, giving them what they need and want so that they can, in turn, give us a beautiful, happy, balanced vehicle to go through life.
Ultimately we are our own doctors. So I invite you to put on your lab coats as we explore the laboratory of our individual human bodies, figure out what works for us and what we each need to thrive and then run with it!
We’ll delve deeper into the three main statements/principles, that sum up bio-individuality:
- No one diet or lifestyle works for everyone.
- Your needs will change over time.
- One person’s food is another person’s poison.“
