Participation of girls and women in STEM fields is much lower than their male counterparts at all levels of education. According to the UNESCO groundbreaking report: “Cracking the code: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM”, only 35% of STEM students in higher education globally are women, and differences are observed within STEM disciplines. This gender disparity is alarming, especially as STEM careers are often referred to as the jobs of the future, driving innovation, social well-being, inclusive growth and sustainable development. In the UK, the percentage of women with STEM degrees has dropped from 25% to 24% (19% in the UK, UCAS Statistics & 12% in Engineering).

This meet up is an opportunity for those passionate about empowerment girls and seeing more women pursuing careers in STEM to network and collaborate

#SMWLAGOS 2020, is a great place and time to build a community around girl, women and STEM networks, such that beyond coding, AI, IoT, AR, VR etc., Information Technology (IT) is deployed intelligently to resolve national development and socio-economic transformation issues. Engaging Women and Girls in STEM through social media, blogging, video and audio messaging, digital communication and data analytics would exponentially increase awareness thus boosting female representation in STEM-related sectors such as Energy, Power, Infrastructure, Mining, Manufacturing, Agro-allied, Oil and Gas sectors.

A "Women and Girls in STEM MeetUp" would not only serve as a platform for learning development and information sharing but would also serve as an opportunity for networking, role modeling, mentoring and coaching. This would add immense traction to achieving diversity, SDGs, tackling sustainability issues while adding value to optimizing resources in the world at large, most especially emerging economies.
