Civic Tech is the intersection between citizen engagement and the use of technology. It embraces all digital tools that enable citizens to easily and effectively engage in their civic duties including - reporting an issue to a local authority, engaging with elected representatives or monitoring the use of community assets.

The use of tech to strengthen governance processes is increasingly growing in Nigeria. Federal, State governments and CSOs have led this process via the creation of mobile Apps, SMS platforms, websites etc all touted as civic platforms. Examples include Zabe App (election monitoring), Citizen’s gate (Lagos State), Nigeria’s Budget Office Mobile App. Also, there is an increasing rise of civic tech hubs in Nigeria – Civic Hive, Civic Hub, Civic Innovation Lab, Cc Hub’s Governance Arm etc.

The purpose of this session is to lead a discussion on civic engagement, the responsibility of of citizen to get involved with governance and how technology facilitates this.
