Over the years, the travel lifestyle of consumers has evolved and followed the trends influenced by social media and technology. For example, the collapse of big industry giants such as Thomas Cook which was founded 178 years ago due to their inability to go digital and leverage on technology and social media.

This session will create an opportunity for attendees to gain insights on emerging industry trends and participate in a discussion on travel as an evolving part of media, technology and the social modern world.

This session will explore the latest changes in the travel, specifically:
[1] The Influence of Social Media on Travel: Social media today is a great influence on travelers. Research shows 52% of Facebook users get their inspiration from a friend’s posts and influencers. People tend to get their booking more often from online platforms, they also tend to go to social media for references instead of guide books or page maps. There are a variety of reasons why social media should be exploited as a medium to influence the minds of travelers.
[2] New Business Trends in the Travel industry: There are a few new trends which include increase in demand for luxury hospitality travel experience, home ware companies creating their own hotels to serve as a means of advertisements to families, sustainability travel is on the rise as more and more people demand for Eco friendly environments.
[3] How Travel Interests Have Shaped Lifestyles & Career Of Young People: in today’s world, travel has had great influence over the lives of young people throughout the world as more and more of them choose to travel the globe as a lifestyle and/or a career path to generate income as opposed to the traditional way of making a living. An example is the Ugandan - Jessica Nbongo who is the first documented black woman to have traveled to all countries of the world.
[4] Influence of technology in modern travel: Technological advances in the modern day travel include the mobile phone passport which enables the use of passport data on smartphones .The trial will first take place in Canada and the Netherlands in 2019, switching to mobile passport. Increase of bio-metrics in airports which would ease check-ins and reduce documentation, crypto currency and other technological advancements.
