Exploring the informalities within the city of Lagos, examining and adopting the cities underbelly as a model for creative and socio-economic development.

Our agenda in 2019 at rai is extroversion.
Extroversion, our big English for going to the streets of Lagos prefers to do away with the insular, white-walled gallery, which we see as a vestige of the colonial; instead, we embrace the city, scouting for existing cultural substructures, looking specifically at how the city ‘makes do’ daily, from the typography across the walls in the city, to those selling goods in traffic, the book sellers under the bridge, the men selling Suya in the evenings or ‘Madam 7:30’ those women who turn ordinary junctions into popular spots for food, relaxation and entertainment.

Our agenda's outstretched arms easily welcomed those not formally trained in arts, or architecture, and design to form an army of evangelists to propagate and multiply the work across numerous outposts with fresh eyes other than the trained eye.

Our knowledge repository at Silverbird galleria - which in itself is a spatial intervention - became the transmitting base and laboratory for a network of outposts. We hosted experiments as preludes to our acts of extroversion by fostering collaborations between our roster of artists who examined and expose the underbelly of the city's operations. Our talk Na Condition Make Crayfish Bend invites the audience and our group of panelists to reflect on some of these findings, as we begin to negotiate more localized ways of urbanizing cities which puts the people at the center of its planning.
